Intern Testimonials

  1. As a student in my final year at the University of Alabama School of Optometry (UABSO), I had the opportunity to do an externship at an outside clinic where I would gain first-hand clinical exposure under the guidance and mentoring of an experienced, licensed optometrist. Plano Vision Center had the largest optometry clinic I had ever seen. However, it was soon apparent to me just how necessary all the space was because there was so much going on under one roof. Clearly, this was not a typical private eye care establishment. I was surprised to see a spacious room that housed a wide variety of equipment, activities and computers dedicated to vision therapy for children dealing with issues of visual processing and learning. I got a glimpse of the effort that goes into how much Plano reaches out to the community with free vision screenings at health fairs in churches, schools and community centers in the city of Chicago. On days when the clinic is typically closed for business, there were comprehensive exams performed by Plano’s committed doctors on school children who were bused in from Chicago area schools. Eyeglasses were provided for each child that required a pair. On a more personal level, I was touched by the mentoring, support and encouragement provided by Dr Stephanie and Dr. Joseph McCray. I was also awestruck by the number of adult patients that told me that had been coming to Plano since they were young and they don’t trust anyone else with their family’s eye care. I am thankful for the exposure I had and am committed to follow the examples set forth in serving my community, not only on a professional level, but on a personal one.

  2. Thank you for graciously giving me the opportunity to work within the Plano Vision Therapy Clinic. This experience has truly been nostalgic for me. Many of the activities that I perform with the patients I can remember doing when I was younger as a vision therapy patient. The experience and knowledge that I have gained while working at the clinic has helped me understand my own learning disability more. I thank you for giving me the opportunity to do so.

  3. Plano Child Development Center was an awesome externship site. Not only did I get a chance to see the routine primary eye care and contact lens fits, but I also experienced a facet of optometry that many of us do not get to see often, Behavioral Optometry. Not only did Dr. Stephanie and the entire Plano Child Development Center give me a model to take back to the rural areas of Alabama, they taught me to incorporate the entire patient into eye care. They also provided me with a home away from home, and taught me the meaning of being a part of the optometric field.
